I knew only a few words in English,
I came from a place where the idea of mom and dad living in different homes was foreign to me.
Friend, you opened a new world for me!
A world I didn’t know existed, tenderly revealed through laughter.
I learned from you,
That you, white people, are just like us, brown.
At first, I knew you as Mrs. Doubtfire,
But in time, I learned you had a name,
A life of your own.
What conversations we had!
What skill, what speed you possessed!
I thought you had it all figured out, my friend.
A man with no worries,
A man of everlasting happiness.
How convenient it was for me to believe that.
But now, where will I find you?
You are like a speck of sand in the vast desert of life.
Once, you were a giant I could easily hold in my hands,
But I let you slip through my fingers and lost you.
Today,
I’ll let my brain take a back seat for a moment and let my heart feel you.
Enough missing you for the world you showed me, my friend.
Now, I’ll look for you in the faces I see every day,
In those who are akin to you and me.
Let me not ignore the words of Christ: "You shall pass this way but once."
Let me cherish the golden moments of life, not squander them on trivialities.
Let my actions with those around me silently say, "Live in peace,"
And never again wait to say, "Rest in peace."
